Become a Koʻa Kiaʻi
Koʻa is the Hawaiian word for coral and Kiaʻi means caretaker or guardian. By symbolically adopting a coral, you, too, can become a caretaker of coral, or koʻa kiaʻi! All adoption funds support MOC Marine Institute’s Coral Conservation Program. Each adoption certificate is unique and will share information on the coral specimen that your donation helped nurse back to health.
As a Koʻa Kiaʻi, your adopted coral will be collected from the near shore waters of Maui. MOC Marine Institute collects “corals of opportunity” from the ocean to ensure we are imposing no negative ecological impacts on the coral reef ecosystem. Your adopted coral will be nursed back to health in our land based nursery, and used to create healthy, vibrant coral colonies that can be planted back onto the reef.
Each coral adoption package includes:
A personalized Koʻa Kiaʻi Certificate
MOC Marine Institute Corals of Hawaiʻi Pamphlet
Subscription to MOCMI’s newsletter
