Internship Program


Overview:

MOCMI’S internship program is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the marine sciences.

  • Internships are for one semester and require a minimum weekly commitment of 15 hours
  • During their internship, each student will be assigned a mentor while they undertake a personal project
  • Interns participate in community engagement initiatives, daily operations, and field work
  • Internships are unpaid positions and housing is not provided

Application Deadlines:

Fall Internship (starts in September, specific date flexible) – application deadline: 08/30/2019

Spring Internship (Starts in January, specific date flexible) – application deadline: 11/01/2019

Summer Internship (starts in May, specific date flexible) – application deadline: 03/01/2019


Qualifications:
  • Applicant must be 18 years of age or older
  • Applicant should be enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited college or university, be enrolled in a graduate program, or be a recent graduate from a college or university
  • Students must be self-motivated and willing to learn
  • Preference will be given to students enrolled in the Sustainable Science Management degree program or the Marine Options Program at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College

Coral Reef Conservation Internship (3 positions/semester)

Under the direction of MOCMI’s Coral Specialists and biologists, students will engage in a variety of activities related to coral reef conservation and restoration, including:

  • Development and implementation of an independent research project
  • Identification of coral species found in Hawai’i
  • Application of field research methods to assess coral cover, abundance, and reef health
  • Coral husbandry in MOCMI’s coral nursery
  • Coral restoration projects on Maui


Fishing Line Recycling Program Internship (3 positions/semester)

Under the direction of MOCMI’s biologists, students will assist with the installation, monitoring, and data collection activities related to the Fishing Line Recycling Program, including:

  • Development and implementation of an independent research project
  • Conducting qualitative surveys with recreational fishers
  • Assisting staff with site selection and installation of fishing line recycling bins
  • Monitoring bins and data collection
  • Sorting, weighing, and measuring fishing line collected


Education and Outreach Internship (4 positions/semester)

Under the direction of MOCMI staff, students will assist with various outreach and educational programs related to marine conservation, including:

  • Development and implementation of an independent research project
  • Educating guests at MOC through MOCMI’s informational kiosk
  • Facilitating MOCMI educational programs
  • Conducting outreach programs or informational tables for MOCMI and community events


Marine Debris Internship (2 positions/semester)

Under the direction of MOCMI’s biologists, students will assist with beach and reef cleanups, and other research projects related to pollution prevention, including:

  • Development and implementation of an independent research project
  • Collecting and recording data
  • Assisting with planning beach and reef cleanup events
  • Assisting with various marine debris and pollution prevention research projects
