Sea husbandry and rehabilitation volunteers assist with the on-site, day-to-day care of patients.
Volunteer duties include conducting water quality monitoring, recording food and fecal count, cleaning saltwater holding tanks, food prep and assisting with sea turtle treatments as requested by MOCMI staff.

Coral Husbandry & Conservation
Coral husbandry and conservation volunteers assist with the on-site, day-to-day care of corals in our ex-situ (land-based) nursery.
Volunteer duties include water quality monitoring, cleaning saltwater aquaria, animal health assessments, feeding, and maintenance. There may also be opportunities to participate in research projects, coral fragmenting, outplantings.
Position Requirements: – Must be at least 16 years of age – Must commit to 6 months of service – Must work a minimum of one three-hour shift (9am – 12pm)
Threat Mitigation
Threat mitigation volunteers assist in projects managing the collection and recording of marine debris around the island that pose a risk to aquatic life.
Volunteer duties include collecting gear from MOCMI sponsored Fishing Line Recycling Bins around the island, sorting hooks and weights, measuring and photographing fishing line, and transcribing information into a digital database. Threat mitigation volunteers may also be asked to assist with beach and/or reef clean-up organization and execution.
Position Requirements: – Must be at least 16 years of age – Must commit to 6 months of service – Must work a minimum of one shift a week
EducationalOutreach
Outreach volunteers engage with the local community by educating them about MOCMI and our mission at various outreach events around the island.
Volunteer duties include tabling assistance at community events, kiosk assistance at MOC, presenting for local organizations (not mandatory), and supporting staff at MOCMI-led beach/reef clean-ups.
This assignment requires interacting with attendees positively, leading hands-on educational activities, selling merchandise, collecting donations, and maintaining the cleanliness and attractiveness of the booth/kiosk area. This also may include setup and take down of booths.
Position Requirements: – Must be at least 16 years of age – Must commit to 6 months of service – Must work a minimum of one three-hour shift (ideally 10 am – 1 pm) per week.
Marketing & Media
The Marketing and Media volunteer assists with creating engaging visual and written content to increase overall reach, brand awareness, and grow our community of supporters and donors. They will interact with the public, community partners and other stakeholders on social platforms to help tell MOCMI’s story across Instagram, Facebook, our e-newsletter, and more.
The volunteer will also help manage our symbolic adoption program and other marketing-related tasks.
Volunteer duties include the use online media tools to engage members, donors, and corporate partners. The volunteer will also be expected to work independently and as part of a team. Experience with graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe, etc.) and prior expereince with social media managing is a plus.
Position Requirements: – Must be at least 16 years of age – Must commit to 6 months of service – Must work a minimum of one three-hour shift per week (9am – 12pm or 12pm – 3pm).
In Field Response
In field response volutneers assist with responding to sick, injured, distressed, or otherwise compromised sea turtles reported to MOCMI. When our sea turtle stranding hotline receives a report, field responders are dispatched to assist the lead field responder in locating the compromised sea turtle.
Volunteer duties include the assistance of transporting the turtle to and from the coastal environment, collecting gear, drafting reports, crowd control/education, etc. All in field response volunteers must be comfortable navigating difficult conditions and terrain.
Position Requirements: – Must be at least 16 years of age – Must commit to 6 months of service – Must work a minimum of one three-hour shift (9am – 12pm) – Must be able to pass a physical fitness test
